INTRODUCTION
TEACHING vs PROBLEM SOLVING
Teaching a dog involves introducing new responses contingencies and consequences with the intent of putting that response under the owners stimulus control. Teaching THE THIRD WAY consists of achieving the targeted response on a voluntary basis, establishing a specific cue for its performance, and then establishing a specific cue for its performance, and the management of other possible responses until the concept is learned, rehearsed, and habitual. There are specific strategies and techniques utilized for this goal.
Problem Solving is completely different than teaching. It is undertaken with the intent of modifying or eliminating a pre-existing response that occurs at times or under circumstances where the response is undesirable. Pre-existing responses are much more difficult to influence than the simple introduction of the contingencies and consequences of a new response.
Teaching and problem solving will be compared and strategies for each will be discussed and demonstrated.
WHY DO PROBLEMS HAPPEN?
FINDING THE REAL PROBLEM
The REAL problem between a person and their dog is often disguised by such things as owner expectations, inconsistencies, frustration, misunderstandings, misinterpretations, mismanagement, misinformation, lack of knowledge or empathy, and that list can go on!
Questions will be presented such as Why would a dog knowingly disobey? Could the problem be simple CUE SYSTEM miscommunications? Does a dog ever really KNOW it has done wrong or made a mistake? The intent will be to possibly uncover more accurate reasons for problem behaviours and once more accurate reasons are established, simple more plausible solutions can be created.
Discovery of the REAL problem, empowers the owner to find a REALISTIC and RELIABLE solution.
WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT PROBLEMS?
Once the REAL problem is exposed, FOUR KEY PRINCIPLES will be utilized to develop a viable problem-solving program.
THE FOUR KEY PRINCIPLES TO PROBLEM SOLVING
1. DOGS ARE PERFECT AT BEING DOGS.
There are no problem dogs, just problem behaviours?
New Perspective on CAUSES of Problems.
New possibility for CURING Problems.
2. PROBLEM BEHAVIOR MUST BE PREVENTED THROUGH MANAGEMENT
Habit REHEARSED = Habit REMAINS
Habit MANAGED = Habit MADE DORMANT
Efficient Management Programs
Effective Management Tools and Techniques
3. PROBLEM BEHAVIOURS ARE HABITUAL BEHAVIORS.
Habits must be REPLACED with Habits
New Response must be TAUGHT
New Response must be PROOFED
New Response must become new HABIT.
new HABIT must be INCOMPATIBLE WITH Problem HABIT
4. HABITS MUST BE PERMANENTLY PREVENTED AND RELIABLY REPLACED WITH A DIFFERENT HABIT
Habitual behaviors dont disappear, they only become dormant!
Prevent problem scenario until REPLACEMENT RESPONSE is READY
REPLACEMENT RESPONSE is READY when it is a HABIT
REPLACEMENT HABIT must happened BEFORE old habit has chance to recur
PROBLEM SUBMISSIONS
NOTE TO ALL ATTENDEES:
Actual problems submitted by attendees (please use a separate sheet and mail with your reservation and payment or email to Bev@foxfirepublishing.com. We prefer emailed submissions) will be used to provide the opportunity for attendees to witness THE THIRD WAY's theories and techniques for problem solving in action! Sample problems will include those from obedience and agility competition, household pet situations, service dog requirements, dogs acting in defense of resources, possession at the moment, space issues and /or personal safety. Selected submissions will be invited to bring dogs for demonstration purposes.
You are invited to submit as much detail about the dog and the problematic behaviour(s) as possible. Any question regarding any competitive venue, any service dog endeaveor, any household pet problem or any other dog/human relationship scenario will be welcome. Write-ups will be selected based on problems that offer the best possible learning experience of the majority of attendees. Not all question will be used for the seminar. You may also submit your write up to Bev Lewis at Bev@foxfirepublishing.com for selection of demo dogs should you be interested in bringing your dog to the seminar as a demonstration problem. We will contact you should your problem submission be chosen.
