Since 1995, Lynn Young has been giving workshops entitled Roll Over Rover - a pet preparation course for expectant parents bringing home a new baby.
She has been interviewed by Canadian Living, the Ottawa Citizen, Ottawa Women, CBC Radio nationally and locally, CJOH TV, New RO and Rogers Cable 22. In addition, she offers pet dog classes and private consultation.
Lynn is a mother of two children: 8 year old Sarah and 4 year old William. Her hairy child is a 7 year old Springer Spaniel, Becky. "Roll Over Rover" was inspired by her previous rescued Spaniel, Oscar. She also shares her responsibilities with a very supportive husband, David.
Lynns training philosophy builds on developing the relationship between dogs and their people. It is the responsibility of the owner to understand how the dog learns and perceives its world before a successful partnership can be achieved.
Contrary to popular belief, dogs are not pack animals, nor do they spend their entire life trying to dominate or please their owners. Rather, they are motivated by the desire to live, reproduce and eat. They have no morals or values to guide their decisions and will repeat or experiment with any behaviour, especially if it results in a pleasant or personally gainful consequence.
Lynn uses a reinforcement-based training method to help owners to guide, manage and educate their dogs so that inappropriate behaviors do not lead to a breakdown in the relationship.
Over the course of many years, Lynn has developed a seminar (called Roll Over Rover) on preparing the family dog for the arrival of a new baby. Through independent study and life experiences Lynn has incorporated infant and child development information into her seminar. She applies her knowledge of dog training and behaviour to the challenges of being a new parent. Her seminars, offered both in groups and privately, concentrate on creating a safe and harmonious environment for all the family members involved, including the dog. Lynn has also compiled an extensive handout with training exercises and resources crucial for any dog owner and future parent.
Lynn is a member of OKC (Ottawa Kennel Club) and HABAC (Human Animal Bond Association of Canada) and volunteers for the Ottawa Humane Society and BARK (Bytown Association of Rescued Kanines).
