SEMINAR SUMMARY
This is a Two-Day Workshop style Seminar with input and discussion from attendees with regards to pre-chosen problem dogs. We regret that we must limit the number of attendees. While the issues addressed may be dog-to-dog aggression or dog-to-human aggression as in the past, this workshop is not to be confused with those seminars. This is an entirely new program to address various areas of problems with our canine companions. Demonstration dogs will be chosen with that criteria in mind.

TOPICS
Attendees will observe the assessment of dogs pre-selected for a variety of problem behaviours relating to humans and/or other dogs. Each dog will be assessed and an individual training program determined.

Calvin and Cheryl will work with “each” dog over the two days according to the developed protocol to demonstrate the effectiveness of the techniques that will be specifically designed to develop individual and alternative choices that are “appropriate in the dog’s environment”. The audience will have the opportunity for input and discussion as well as being furnished with an outline of the issues and other pertinent details for each demonstration dog.

Attendees will learn by observing and discussion:
• how to identify the issues
• risk assessment
• management issues or legal issues
• goal setting
• problem resolution
• training exercises

Attendees will also receive a basic outline of the issues of each dog in their hand out package.

Owners of the selected dogs will receive training in the techniques, a copy of the program and follow up attention. Due to the specialized nature of this workshop, owners of the selected dogs will be required to pay an additional fee with an “earlybird” price available. Cheryl Smith – A Dog Trainer Guru

Cheryl Smith, a born communicator and educator, started her career as an elementary school teacher dealing with inner city and disadvantaged children. After five years, she made the transition to a Human Resources Specialist in the field recruitment, training and employee counseling.

In 1972, Cheryl began instructing dog obedience classes on a part-time basis and, in 1989, opened The Good Dog Training School” in Toronto. She then moved to Ottawa in 1994 and launched Urika Consultants, a private consultation service specializing in canine behaviour, and Forever Friends Dog Training School, a training facility offering a variety of classes using positive training techniques. Over the years, she has guided both to successful businesses, earning a solid reputation as an exceptionally gifted behaviourist and trainer.

In a 2006 poll conducted by an Ottawa radio station, Forever Friends Dog Training School rated third most popular in the City of Ottawa. However, in the hearts of her clients and students, Cheryl and Forever Friends Dog Training School rates number one as is reflected in the following comment:

“Forever Friends Dog Training School is one of the few dog training facilities that I am comfortable in recommending. The School has trainers who have extraordinary teaching and personal skills and who embrace positive, motivational training techniques.  While every trainer at the school is top notch, the School is very fortunate to have Cheryl Smith, who is recognized throughout North America for her exceptional skills as a behaviourist, teacher, trainer, lecturer and author. I am pleased to vote for Forever Friends Dog Training School as Ottawa’s best dog training facility. “ Candice O’Connell, Chair, National Capital Coalition for People and Dogs.

Cheryl’s credentials are impressive. Throughout her career, she has attended numerous training seminars by Job Michael Evans, Carol Lee Benjamin, Jack and Wendy Volhard, Dr. Ian Dunbar and the University of Guelph’s Behavioural Science Department.

A charter member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (A.P.D.T.), Cheryl has spoken at conferences in Memphis, Houston, St. Louis and Chicago. And, she has conducted highly acclaimed workshops and seminars around the globe, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Portland, Chicago, Indianapolis, Columbus, Richmond, VA Washington, DC, Pickering, Kingston, Kemptville, Ottawa, Toronto, Port Hope, Sudbury, Calgary and Japan.
?In October 2005, Cheryl conducted the two-day CSI Ottawa: Crime Scene Investigation for Challenging Canines Seminar, which was approved for continuing education credits by the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians (OAVT). This comprehensive and informative seminar included topics such as Myth vs. Reality, Effects of Stress and Relieving Stress, Influences on Behaviour, The Body Says It All, and Defining the Problem: Four S's of Survival.

As an internationally recognized behaviourist and trainer, Cheryl was chosen to participate on the American Humane Society and Delta Society sponsored committee tasked with the development of ethics and practices from humane dog training. Currently, she serves on the Board of Directors for Therapeutic Paws of Canada.

Cheryl developed the concept of “Growl Classes”, using humane behaviour modification techniques to retrain dogs that display aggressive behaviour towards humans and/or other dogs. These classes are in such high demand that she is often requested to take the classes on the road to other locations. She is also the author of "Biting, Barking, Lunging, Growling" (retraining an anxious fearful dog without intimidation).

Through her extensive work as a canine behaviour specialist, Cheryl is recognized as an expert witness by Canadian courts on dog aggression and is often called upon to testify. When not teaching, lecturing or testifying, Cheryl is active in the community, donating her time and talent to people and animals in need. In November 2005, she partnered with several other local businesses to organize a fundraiser for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and in February 2006 put together another fundraiser for the victims of the Asian Tsunami. And, on an ongoing basis, she generously volunteers her expertise to numerous rescues, assisting in temperament assessments and training for dogs that are looking for their forever homes.

Cheryl continues to live and work in Ottawa where she shares her home with three dogs, Chica, Aryanna and Drago, and five cats, Laylah, Moon Shadow, Sundancer, Doodad and Clyde Spiritwalker.

Dr. Ian Dunbar calls Cheryl “one of the top trainers” but to many of her students, canine and human, she is a compassionate, gentle friend who is a dedicated and talented dog trainer guru.

Calvin Thompson

Calvin began studying canine behaviour in 1994 under the sage tutelage of Cheryl Smith, and has worked with thousands of dogs and their owners at Forever Friends Dog Training Centre in Ottawa. Calvin’s excellent knowledge of canine obedience and applied behavioral solutions both manage the effects and solve behavioral problems for his clients.

Calvin has a no-nonsense, results-oriented approach based on positive reinforcement techniques, and individualized assessments begin with practical behavioral fact finding. His understanding of cause and assessment of behaviour problems is complemented by his keen perception of canine body language and other surrounding factors, and are particularly helpful to avoid escalation or unsafe situations when dealing with very serious behavioral problems.

Calvin’s goal is to nurture a calm, relaxed and self confident dog. By teaching prevention, and setting up structured learning scenarios where the dog is offered clear direction of appropriate versus non-appropriate behaviour, and can be redirected to make the correct choice, positive learning can take place. This is the foundation upon which concrete results are accomplished.

Calvin has studied a broad range of experts in the canine field, such as Cheryl Smith, Turid Rugas, Dr. Ian Dunbar, Chris Bach, Kay Lawrence, Pamela Reid and Jean Donaldson, attends numerous Animal Behaviour Symposiums at Guelph University, and closely follows the teachings and insights of Steven R. Lindsay. Calvin is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) and the Canadian chapter (CAPDT).
